Panch Prayag

Uttarakhand is a home to sacred Prayags – that stand for Confluence. However, there are only 5 such places in Uttarakhand that you will explore. These confluences are the following:

• Vishnuprayag
• Nandprayag
• Karnprayag
• Rudraprayag
• Devprayag

These together are called as Panch Prayag. The sacred destinations are following the route – created by the mighty and sacred Alaknanda River – that has been emerging from Himalaya’s Satopanth Glacier. It starts with Alaknanda, where it meets Dhauliganga River at Vishnuprayag and move towards Nandprayag to meet Nandakini River. It further moves forward towards Karanprayag where it joins Pindar River.

The Pindar River unites with Nandakini River at Rudraprayag and joins the last one – called as Bhagirathi River at Devprayag together and become one of the mighty rivers – called as River Ganges that flows down to Plains – reaching Rishikesh (the holy Place) and then to Haridwar, where it is worshiped most commonly.

Vishnuprayag, that is the first place to where Alaknanda joins Dhauliganga, is the first of Panch Prayag – at the distance of around 35 km from Badrinath.

Nandaprayag is the second of Panch Prayag – Alaknanda meets River Nandakini.

Karnaprayag is the third of Panch Prayag – where Alaknanda joins River Pindar that is originating from Pindar Glacier from Nanda Devi Mountain Range.

Rudraprayag is the fourth of Panch Prayag where Alaknanda Meets Mandakini. This confluence got its name after Lord Shiva, who performed Tandav here in his fierce form or Rudravtar.

Devprayag is the last of Panch Prayag – the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi – immensely revered. Bhagirathi flows from the glaciers of Gangotri and counted as first confluence to meet on the way to Badrinath. In this way, Devprayag is the holy gateway to Char Dhams in Uttarakhand.
